10 June NEWS

Filming has begun! We filmed a few Simon and Abby scenes and almost all of the cemetery shots with Doug and Quintino. But we did forget this one line where Doug says: "Note to self," which I was pretty upset about it. But then I realized it would fit better at the side of the road. So we will save that line for then.

Tomorrow Beth and I will do the Downtown Irwin scenes.

The plan is to really start filming in July. So we need everyone to be available for July (1,2; 16; 29,30) and please everyone keep August 12th and 13th free. The party scene will be August 13th at the Rosemeyers, say 2pm. We need pretty much everyone for these days for shooting, with the exception of Lackey and The Grease. But you two are still invited to the party, so please come. And also we will have one more read-through, this time really paying attention to tone and delivery and we can work on blocking out shots, etc. This I would like to do Friday June 30th, 7pm, my place. Then the next morning we begin shooting. Everyone needs to have their costumes by then and might as well bring them to the read-through.

To recap:
June 30 (Friday at 7ish) 2nd and last read-through at Em and Jay's - bring costume.

--------->Cabin (Ian, Doug, Emory, Waldo, Abby, Simon, Julie, Geoffrey, Jack)

July 29,30 (Saturday at 9am, Sunday at 1:30pm)
---------> Free weekend to get caught up in case of rain or the unexpected.

August 12 (Saturday at 9am)
--------->Holland Park (Ian, Doug, Simon, Abby, Emory, Waldo, Quintino, Georgie)

August 13 (Sunday at 2pm, the Rosemeyers)
--------->Party scene (Ian, Doug, Emory, Waldo, Quintino, Georgie, Kaboom, Abby, Simon, Jack, Julie, Geoffrey)

AND INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!!!

ps This does not include the scene where Ian wakes up and Quintino is behind his door. Need to have a room (c'mon Joel, let us use your room). And there is also the character intro stuff: Doug with a line of kids behind him; Waldo and Emory arm wrestling; Simon and Abby stuff (which better get done tomorrow).

pps Get 'er done

ppps Kill me.

Newsies

Here it is below, the newest script.

A - F
I added in the letters for our locations. You'll notice Dan and Jon that I have combined the Creek scenes with the Holland Park scenes, thus making the letter G obsolete, like year old technology.

Script Changes
I believe I have made Emory's line "I was a lot quieter" more understandable by adding in Waldo saying, off camera, "That's doubtful!" I'm pretty sure the other changes are things we discussed at the read through and Beth changed some of her lines as well.

Oh here's a big change, I have altered Beth's name to Bethany on the cast list. I hope this is ok Beth, or Bethany.

Dan, I have Doug carrying a rake at the scene where he is walking on the road and says, "This is going to be effortless. All I have to do is wear this mustache and keep moving." So when Doug gets caught Waldo says, "Nice outfit Jerk." To which Doug says, "Shut your mouth." This is in the vicinity of page 29 big sirs. So then when Doug says "That's it" a bit later he throws the rake down and advances. Ian holds him back.

Grease is officially The Grease.

TNT is offically Kaboom.

Props
I forgot that we also need a mini sound recorder, which I can get from my dad, and also Beth I believe has one.

We also need Sand for Lackey's hair. It was Dan's idea and I added it in.

Comments and Posts
Everyone feel free to comment on anything and post on anything.

This Saturday and Sunday
Mainly Simon and Abby scenes. Also Doug scenes. We will attempt to schedule more shoots this weekend, but given that the movie takes place predominantly outside, it will have to remain tentative.

Loose Schedule
Saturday shoots will start early:8am/9am; Sunday shots will be from 1/2pm on.
June 10,11 (Simon and Abby, Doug, probably Emory and Waldo arm wrestling shot)
June 24, 25 (Hard to say if I can get off, but Dan might decide to shoot without me, Jon, and Mat)
July 1,2 (As much as possible)
July 16, Sunday, (Something)
July 29,30 (Something, but no Mat)
August 12,13 (Holland Park, Cabin, Party Scene)

My hope is that we do not go into August. So I am reluctant to waste time and energy on scheduling when what it comes down to is weather and availability, last minute problems, and who knows what else. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and try to cram as many shots as possible when people are free.

AExt. Outside Doug’s House (Rosemeyer Household). Sweeping shot from above house.

AInt. Doug’s house. [End of School Party at Doug's. Camera walks through room as Ian narrates].

IAN (Narrating; speaking shots not italicized or underlined)
The end of school soirée. We usually have a party at my house but this year we decided to have it at Doug's. That's him there.

Shot of Doug reading a newspaper. He looks up and off to the left, then to the right. He throws the paper down and walks off camera.
Cut to shot of Doug walking with six kids, in a line, behind him. Camera focuses on Doug's face then zooms out quickly to reveal a line of five or six kids behind him.

IAN
I've known Doug since the third grade, so about 9 years now. He's the self-proclaimed leader of our group, though it suits us just fine. He's a natural-born leader. There's Waldo.

Shot of Waldo playing video game, aggressively.

IAN
And there's Emory. They're fraternal twins.

Camera pans over to Emory then out to show both.

IAN
Though all of my friends are competitive to a degree, Waldo and Emory are intensely competitive. But they’re not interested in winning so much as they’re interesting in arguing and in playing. In other words, they’re very irritating. They once fought over whose letter grade looked the best¤. Waldo's was better.

*Shot of Waldo and Emory arm wrestling. Camera will start tight on clasped hands, then zoom out.
¤Shot of two grade papers on refrigerator. A woman's hand judges the papers, then attaches a sticker to Waldo's. At top of papers will be "Emory" and "Waldo" in crayon, respectively. From a coloring book.

Back to shot of Emory and Waldo.
Camera moves left to Shot of Quintino

IAN
Hey there’s Quintino

Camera pans over, Quintino is gone.

IAN
Hmm. He’s really good at that.

Georgie walks in to shot with a soccer ball in his arm.

IAN
Georgie is a foreign exchange student from Italy. He’s staying with Quintino and wants to be like him, but it’s not really panning out.

Enter Kaboom with flowers in her hand.

KABOOM
Hey Georgie, did you see Quintino?

GEORGIE
Cool.

IAN
That’s Kaboom

Georgie walks out of shot, Kaboom remains, looking forlorn. Camera moves to reveal Simon and Abby doing the Goldblum-water scene from Jurassic Park.

IAN
There’s Simon and Abby. They've been best friends since I met them in the third grade, and were probably friends longer than that. In fact, they were probably born good friends. They do everything together. Well, not everything.

[Split screen shot of fetus'] Shots of Abby and Simon playing a game together, planting flowers together, jumping in ditch, and then going into the bathroom together. Simon stops at women's sign. Waits. Abby comes out, goes to Men's sign. Waits. They walk off together. (They wait patiently)

IAN
And that’s me.

Shot of Ian, he nods at the camera with his glass.

IAN
Not too much to say about me. You’ll find me to be fairly levelheaded and reliable. In about three minutes I'm going to talk to a girl. I drew a picture of us talking.* Anyway, that's the group. And I think Doug has something to say. He's a natural-born leader.

Shot of Ian going to snack table to eat pretzels.
*Cut to shot of his drawing, done with colored pencil. The page had obviously been crumbled up.
Shot of Doug standing next to Ian.

DOUG
Who’s up for some HNGS? (Mixed applause) Let’s go!

Group goes out before Doug, Doug holds open door.

IAN
HNGS is what we call Hide n Go Seek, sometimes called HAGS.

DOUG
Ian (points towards yard with head), you coming?

IAN
I’ll be there in a second.

Enter Jack. He grabs a pretzel and bites it.

IAN
So how about that HAGS?

*Ian is the only one who calls it HAGS

Jack nods and looks off to the right.

End of scene. Cut to backyard. Medium Shot of Doug sitting at a picnic table with his head down and counting out loud.

AExt. Doug’s Backyard.

DOUG
26-27-28- Emory now I can hear you

Wide shot of picnic table, with Emory getting out from under it, opposite side, and running.

EMORY
I was a lot quieter (as he runs off).

WALDO
(off camera) That’s doubtful!

DOUG
29…30!

Shot of Doug walking off in pursuit of those hiding.

DOUG
Last one found wins – you know the rules!

AInt. Doug’s House.
Cut to party scene. Medium shot of Ian standing by snack table. He walks towards front door, steps outside. Camera follows.

AExt. Doug’s Front Yard.
Cut to medium shot outside of door, follows him to top of the steps, he leans on column.. Cut to medium shot from bottom of stairs looking up at Ian. He has a drink in right hand. He looks out into the yard, notices Julie at bottom of stairs. Camera tilts down and zooms out to reveal Julie looking bored at the bottom of the stairs.

AExt. Doug’s Back Yard.
Cut to Back yard scene. Shot of Simon and Abby hiding behind the shed. Abby will peek from below, Simon from above. Zoom out to include Doug. Zoom in on Doug. He goes into the pine trees. The camera continues to pan right revealing Waldo and Emory running out of the pine trees. Other hiders will be seen as well – as many as we’d like.

AExt. Doug’s Front Yard.
Cut to Ian at top of steps. And breathes in to sort-of prepare himself. Wide Shot of Ian walking down the steps to Julie. Camera zooms in a bit, slowly. There’s someone in the foreground blocking the fact that Jack and Julie are holding hands. Ian smiles, raises glass. Julie laughs. Ian goes to hug her/ look at her tag.*Julie: What are you drinking?/ Ian: Apple Juice actually / Julie: Oh yeah. I love juice../ Ian: I love juice too! Pause. I like that shirt, (very awkwardly), what…what is it made of?*

* This is acted out while Ian is narrating. The viewer will only see their actions and their lips moving, but will not know what is being said until later in the story.

IAN
That’s me getting up the nerve to talk to Julie. She just moved here in August. I didn’t have any classes with her but I saw her around a bit. I’d always wanted to talk to her, but never had the nerve. Now that school was over things felt different – as if I had all the sudden lost my inhibitions.

AExt. Doug’s Back Yard.
Cut to backyard. Shot of Doug sneaking through pine trees, walking to back of shed. He sees Simon and Abby peeking out. Cut to close up shot of Simon and Abby.

SIMON
Do you see where he went?

ABBY
No, do you hear him?

Stick breaks behind Simon.

SIMON
(Looking up) Yes, actually.

Shot of Doug tagging Simon on the right shoulder.

DOUG
Got you!

Wide shot of Doug holding Simon, both standing as Abby attempts a getaway – but she falters and quickly gives up. Doug tags her. Camera tilts up to reveal Waldo walking towards front of the shed’s roof. Doug looks up as Abby and Simon walk off together towards back porch.

DOUG
You know I can see you Waldo. How are you going to get down?

WALDO
I’ll jump over your head and onto that chimney.

Camera follows his finger to the chimney and back onto Waldo, then camera moves down to Doug, looking interested.

EMORY (off camera)
I doubt that very much, Waldo.

Cut to wide shot of Ian walking through back door onto porch.

IAN
I take it you two are caught?

They nod in unison. Simon and Abby are thumb wrestling as Emory watches.

IAN
And what about you?

EMORY
I’m hiding.

Emory takes his eyes off of their thumbs to say this then looks back at them for a second and jumps over railing towards the side of the house.

Ian walks out towards yard. Cut to wide shot of Doug standing looking up towards roof of shed as Ian enters frame.

IAN
What’s happening?

DOUG
I’m waiting for him to jump to that chimney.

Doug nods his head towards the chimney. While they are talking his attention is mostly directed towards the roof of the shed at Waldo.

IAN
I talked to Julie.

DOUG
Julie?

IAN
The new girl. You know, the one.

DOUG
Ah, Julie. I forgot she was here. You know it’s not really feasible for you to achieve your goal.

IAN
What do you mean? I talked to her, we seemed to hit it off, I mean…

DOUG
No, I’m talking to Waldo. How’s he going to make that jump? It’s like…200 feet.

WALDO
Douggie Dog. Douggie Dog-Dog. Douggie Dog-Dog Dig.

Cut to shot of Emory placing a ladder on side of house. Waldo is heard taunting in background. Doug walks over and tags him. (“Squeaky”)

DOUG
I think we need larger boundaries.

Wide Shot of Emory walking with Doug out towards center of yard.

DOUG
Ok, Waldo you can come down now. Kudos to you. Nobody cares. Everybody listen up: We need larger boundaries. Let’s expand the boundaries to these three back yards (he points to his sides)

Wide shot as everyone joins Doug in center of yard. Waldo jumps down, etc.

IAN
I’m up for anything.

WALDO
How about the whole block over to the Depot’s.

EMORY
Easy. I say the whole town.

WALDO
Yeah sure. That makes sense. Why not the whole county.

EMORY
The whole state

WALDO
The whole country.

Cut to shot of Doug thinking as Waldo and Emory continue to argue.

(EMORY:The whole continent/ WALDO: The whole world/ EMORY: The whole galaxy/ WALDO: The whole Universe)

DOUG (over top of them)
Ok-Ok.

Doug breaks up Waldo and Emory as he says this.

EMORY
Whatever’s outside the universe!

DOUG
Alright. I like it. The whole county.

Doug will say this with a smirk.

EMORY
Wait, what? Are you serious?

DOUG
Yeah, it would be fun. Who’s up for a game of countywide HNGS?

Everyone looks at Doug unsurely.

DOUG
We could all meet at Holland Park Monday at 8 am. Seeker gives us, say, 60 minutes – maybe less. You get 30 days to find everyone. Who’s in?

Cut to head shot of Abby. She raises her hand.

ABBY
Can we hide in teams?

DOUG
Hide any way you want. You’ve got the whole county and an entire month to hide. Are we all in?

Wide Shot of the group. Abby and Simon nodding their heads in unison, Waldo and Emory approving (in character), etc.

DOUG
Let’s pick the seeker. Everybody get in tight.
Medium Shot of Ian

IAN
I’ll be right back.

Ian walks off towards house. Doug walks away from circle and grabs a rock to stand-in for Ian. Doug begins to narrow people down.

DOUG
Ibsen bipsen bopsen foe, who is ready to go-go-go?

AInt. Doug’s House.
Cut to medium shot of Ian walking into the kitchen. There are less people than before. He goes through house quickly not looking too hard. Maybe nodding to a few people.

AExt. Doug’s Front Yard.
Cut to wide shot of Doug walking out the front door. Camera zooms out a bit as Ian looks right towards the bottom of the stairs but no one is there.

AExt. Doug’s Back Yard.
Cut to medium shot of Ian walking out of the back door. Camera zooms out a bit as Ian walks towards Doug. Doug is kneeling. The rock and Abby are left. Cut to shot showing, the same scene, Waldo and Emory off to the right, in background, doing pull-ups. Simon stands watching Doug.

DOUG
Are you yes or are you no, Ibsen bipsen bopsen foe. You’re the seeker Ian.

IAN
Awesome! This summer was going to be a good one. I could feel it.

BExt. Holland Park (‘Heritage Park’ Saunder Station).
Wide shot of Doug and Ian. Doug has a clipboard in his hands and a pen – he is checking people off as they arrive.

IAN
I mean I guess you could say we hit it off pretty well, you know…

Simon and Abby walk down hill to join Ian and Doug. Emory and Waldo are arm wrestling off to the side (doing something in character). Others who are playing are around as well. Doug makes two checks for Simon and Abby, shake hands (Good Fortune).

DOUG
Ok, it seems we are missing someone.

Doug looks around then spots Quintino peering from behind a tree. Georgie jumps in front of tree.

DOUG
Oh, I didn’t see you there, Quintino.

Doug checks off Quintino and taps his pen on the clipboard. He looks up.

DOUG
Synchronize your watches. It’s 8:02 am, Monday morning. Now, we all know the rules. Those caught must accompany the seeker until the second to last one hiding is found. If you’re still hiding, and it’s been a month, you can assume you’ve either won or that you are tied with one or more players. I hope everyone brought stuff to sleep in and food to eat. Unlike a regular game of HNGS, cell phones are permitted, but strongly discouraged. Cars are obviously off-limits as well. (Checks off a few thing from his clipboard). Everyone sign this affidavit.

Doug says these lines as if he is reading them from his clipboard. In fact he could and might as well. Doug takes a couple sheets from his clipboard and passes them around. He passes out pencils as well.

DOUG
It basically restates what I have said to you and also that I’m not responsible for you. Standard stuff. Take one and pass it on.

Cut to headshot of Doug.

DOUG
May the best HNGS player win.

All the players scatter. Simon and Abby together. Waldo and Emory at first run off together, then Emory pushes him and Waldo pushes him back. Quintino is at first seen then mysteriously gone.
While Doug is talking he is putting his clipboard in his bag and checking it – he zips it up at * below.

DOUG
Is everything all right?

IAN
Everything’s great.

DOUG
I’m glad you talked to Julie. She seems really nice.

IAN
I know right. She’s awesome.

DOUG
Well, I guess I’ll see you in a month.* (see above note)

IAN
We’ll see about that Douggie-Dog.

DOUG
You know I hate that.

Doug says this as he runs off.
Medium shot of Ian walking towards playground. He sits down on a bench and relaxes.

IAN
Julie. I kept thinking about our conversation. They way she smiled as I won her over. The way her hair seemed to shine, even at dusk*. I thought about how smooth I had been. Not too bad for a guy who had only talked to three girls in his life. Yes, Julie was mine. We were practically dating.

*Ian should only say dusk if the original scene with Julie was shot at dusk.

A(Ext. Doug’s Front Yard.) Shots of their fateful conversation, close-ups of Julie’s smile, her face, shot of Ian ‘hugging’ her. Shots of them talking. Etc.

BExt. Wooded Area 1
Cut to shot of Waldo running, then stopping to pull his walkie talkie out of his bag.

WALDO
Em, where you at?

EMORY
I’m not telling you (static from walkie talkie). I’m trying to get into this grate.

BExt. Holland Park.
Cut to shot of Ian laying on the bench. He looks at his watch then gets up and starts walking up the hill.

IAN
She’s so beautiful. I’ve always had a thing for short hair. And her eyebrows look amazing. Julie? I wasn’t quite sure that it was her at first because she was wearing some kind of hat-thing, but it was her all right. The only question was: who was he? And why was he opening the door for her? Were her arms broken?

BExt. Suburb Sidewalk (Across from Heritage preferrably)
Geoffrey opens the door for Julie. The whole time they are smiling and talking. He is eating a sourdough pretzel. So is Julie. This is a wide shot, but not too far away.

IAN
I hated him immediately. His hair was ridiculous – what was she thinking? And where are they going? I bet that car does awful in the city.

Shot of car driving off.

IAN
I was heart-broken. Julie was mine. I mean we hit it off so well – anyone could have seen that. What does that skull-face have that I don’t? Besides a pretzel.

BExt. Ian’s Car
Ian goes to get in his car. Georgie is standing in front of the driver side door. He is wearing sunglasses and looking off to the left.

IAN
Get out of my way Georgie! Come on, what is this?

Ian pushes Georgie out of the way. Shot of Georgie as car peels off.

Georgie
Cool (upset and confused).

Georgie takes a pink scarf out of his bag and runs off camera. (He thinks he can still hide for some reason)
Kaboom walks by after Georgie exits, she still has the flowers in her hand.

BInt. Ian’s car
IAN
I knew the rules, I signed my name on that affidavit and all, but I had to find out where that tea-totaler was taking her. He looked weird, am I right? I bet he’s an Instant Messenger. In fact, I know that IMer is an instant messenger. And her – it’s like I don’t even know her anymore. Maybe I’m over-thinking this, I mean that skull-face didn’t seem all that bad. He did open the door for her. But why did she let him? And her! The audacity to break my pure and simple heart. I thought I spotted their car, so I sped up. Now he’s making me speed. *As I attempted to get my mind off of Julie and that boy I started to daydream. At first I saw Julie again, as she had been on the night we first talked. But then that skull-face butted in eating pretzels and laughing, I think at the pretzels, which made me really upset. And then Julie was eating pretzels and I looked around at everyone on the front yard and they were all eating pretzels. I tried telling them all that they were duped by a wizard of lies, but they just stood there. So I ran. I ran as fast and as far as my heart would allow me. The pretzels. He’s a pretzel – that’s it. He’s a pretzel.# Then I saw Emory.

A*(Ext. Doug’s Front Yard). Wide shot of Ian and Julie talking. Head shot of Julie talking. Geoffrey butts his head in eating a pretzel – he holds up the half eaten pretzel and laughs at it then back at Julie – who now has a pretzel in her mouth and is laughing as well. Cut to shot of Ian turning his head (slow motion). Wide shot of the people on the lawn standing very still and silent eating pretzels, cut to same shot, but now they are all laughing – one steps forward to hand Ian a pretzel. Cut to shot of Ian yelling and then running, he runs right through the middle of them (slow motion) – wide shot as he exits. Cut to shot of Ian running, camera is in front as he runs (we will need a pick up truck for this shot to do it right).

#Ian will say these lines in his dreams as he’s running away.
Ian’s car pulls off the side of the road. Emory is seen trying to get the grate off of a sewage drain.

IAN
Because of that pretzel-eater I had forgotten what I was supposed to be doing. Who eats pretzels anymore?

BExt. Bottom of Saunder Station Rd./Creek
Ian gets out of his car and walks towards the creek where Emory is.

IAN
Hey, how’s it goin’? I guess this means I found you, though I couldn’t care less about that right now. He’s a…

EMORY
…Stupid monkey-biter. I just can’t get this grate…

IAN
…looking girl, who I thought I loved, off my mind. I’m so…

EMORY
…HOPELESS!

Ian tags Emory

EMORY
I saw you driving.

IAN
What?

EMORY
You signed the affidavit. I saw that too.

IAN
Yeah, I know. Well I’ll give you five minutes. Actually I don’t care.

EMORY
Ok, deal.

Emory continues to try to open grate.

CExt. Downtown Irwin Sidewalk.
Cut to shot of Simon and Abby walking in downtown Irwin.

SIMON
Where do you want to hide, team mate? (said like a timid robot)

ABBY
I do not know, dude (like a robot). How about underground?

SIMON
(Eyes get big, blows out of his mouth)Do you have a shovel (said like a whisper)?

ABBY
Or we could hide in a big ol’ tree.

SIMON
A big ol' tree, huh? That’s cool. Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter anyway. We’ve got the whole county so he’s not going to find us.

ABBY
True (looking off camera with her eyes interested in a place to eat)

SIMON
Double true.

ABBY
Say you’re hungry.

SIMON
I’m hungry?

ABBY
Sweet.

Abby walks off camera towards a place to eat, Simon watches her go confused, then follows off camera.

SIMON
Food. (under his breath)

BExt. Creek.
Cut to shot of Ian watching Emory trying to pull the top off the grate. Ian looks at his watch, rolls his eyes, and walks over to tag Emory.

IAN
Tag you’re it (said very boringly).

Emory looks up at IAN, grabs his walkie talkie, gets up and holds the walkie talkie while he thinks to himself

EMORY
Yeah, you caught me – pretty hard to do when you’re driving, but that’s cool. No, I usually play by the rules, but whatever. That way whenever you win, you know…Man…this sucks. (Talking into walkie talkie) Waldo, hey ‘where’s waldo’, where are you?

DExt. Open Field
Cut to shot of Waldo laying in middle of a field. Aerial shot. His walkie talkie is beside him. He grabs it.

WALDO
I’m completely concealed from everyone.

Wide shot of field, Waldo sits up in the middle of field. Cut back to Emory.

BExt. Creek/Ian’s Car.

EMORY
I’m already caught, loser.

WALDO
Haha!

EMORY
Shut up, at least I was first.

WALDO
Hmm, well I’m like a lizard*, a camouflaged lizard

D*Ext. Open Field.
Quick cut to face shot Waldo, looking proud.

CExt. Creek/Ian’s Car.
Cut back to Emory. Ian grabs the walkie talkie off of Emory.

IAN
You mean like a chameleon?

DExt. Open Field.
Cut to Waldo

WALDO
Wait, who’s that? Hello? Hello?

BExt. Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot of Ian and Emory walking up the hill towards his car. Ian tosses the walkie talkie onto the ground. Emory stops and picks it up.

IAN
Hurry up. You know what it doesn’t matter because she’s gone. She’s with that pretzel-eating IMer.

EMORY
We aren’t going in your car are we?

IAN
Yeah. I’ve got to see where he’s taking her. They could be getting married for all we know. And you better believe that I am going to object. Oh, I’m going to stand right up and tell that skull-face that he’s nuts. Absolutely nuts! (He points).

EMORY
Can we listen to the radio?

IAN
Yeah, I don’t care.

They get in the car.
They drive off. Music plays. Apollo at Go. (Which song?)

DExt. Wooded Area/Cemetery
Cut to shot of Doug running. He comes to a halt at the edge of a wooded area. He places his hands on his knees and tries to catch his breath. He pulls a hat and fake mustache out of his bag and puts them on.

DOUG
This is going to be effortless. Who are you calling Douggie-Dog now, Waldo? Huh? What’s that? You lost the easiest game of your life? You have no money? You need me to loan you a couple bucks to grab a bite to eat? Here’s a million dollars. Yeah, no problem – sike! Ha! Waldo. You lost it, you really lost it.*

*Doug says these lines while he is fooling around with his bag, and then setting it down to grab a rake at the end of his lines.

DExt. Cemetery.
Wide shot of Doug raking in a cemetery.
Cut to shot of Doug raking, then stopping, and pulling a mini-sound recorder from his breast pocket.

DOUG
Note to self

DInt. Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot of Ian driving.

IAN
Gone, no where to be found.

EMORY
How fast does this thing go?

IAN
I don’t know – it says 130, so I guess that fast.

EMORY
My dad’s car goes up to 260, I drive it that fast sometimes – Waldo can’t handle that type of speed.

IAN
What is it with you man? You’re always trying to outdo Waldo.

EMORY
I can’t believe it. You…he’s so great and camouflaged.

IAN
Whoa, what are you talking about?

EMORY
Look over in that field.

Camera zooms out onto field as car drives by. Waldo is lying in the middle of it still.

EMORY
He’s toast. Stop the car. Wow – a camouflaged lizard. Stop the car!

Ian stops the car and Emory, with his walkie talkie in hand, runs out towards the field.
He talks on his walkie talkie as he walks quickly towards Waldo.

DExt. Open Field.

EMORY
Hey, Waldo – you still completely concealed like that red and white striped friend of yours?

Cut to shot of aerial shot of Waldo eating an apple and talking on the walkie talke.

WALDO
Yep completely concealed. Man it sucks to be you though, doesn’t it?

Cut to shot of Emory.

EMORY
Yeah, you bet man, you bet. Tell me something – how long do you think it would take you before you realized that someone had spotted you?

WALDO
Your voice sounds so clear, almost like your close by – these walkie talkies aren’t too bad – mine is probably the better model though. *Hold on, someone’s walking towards me. I’ve got to go.^

*Shot of Waldo sitting up.
^Waldo grabs his bag and starts to run off, looks back, picks up pace a bit and then looks back again.

WALDO
Wait is that you, Em?

EMORY
Yeah, it’s me you old buddy, get over here.

Waldo stops and then starts walking towards Emory as Emory continues to walk towards Waldo.

WALDO
I thought you were caught?

EMORY
Who me? I was just joking, walk with me. (He laughs)

Waldo walks with Emory.

WALDO
I won’t say it surprised me. I mean you usually get caught first, or at least before I do.

EMORY
You know you’re right – (laughs) – Man, you are funny right now. Everything is just funny. Keep walking.

WALDO
Who was that on the walkie talkie?

EMORY
Oh just some salesman – I told him he was nuts.

WALDO
Who’s that up there?

EMORY
That’s the salesman – come on you buddy.

Wide shot of Waldo and Emory with car in background – Ian’s head is on steering wheel.

WALDO
Wait that’s – you little! That’s Ian! You’re trying to set me up…I knew you were caught!

Waldo attempts to run off as Emory grabs his wrist to hold him back.

EMORY
Ian! Ian, get out of the car and tag Waldo! Come on.

WALDO
Let go of me – you’re hurting me, let go!

EMORY
Come tag this little baby. Aw, I’m hurting him. Hurry up!

DInt/Ext Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot Medium shot of Ian as he lifts his head from the steering wheel, gets out of the car, slams the door and runs towards the two of them angrily, camera moves with him.

DExt. Open Field.

EMORY
Tag ‘em, tag ‘em, tag ‘em…

IAN
Tag you’re it, tag you’re it, tag, tag, tag – I don’t care!!!

Ian tags Waldo and then walks quickly back to the car, Emory and Waldo follow.

EMORY
(laughs) You’re a complete nothing. Trying to hide in an open field – did you make sure to bring a steel rod in case of a storm?

WALDO
Very funny. No, no very funny. You cheated, he cheated – let’s just burn the affidavit. While we’re at it let’s just burn the constitution and the declaration of independence, you know – who cares? If you need some extra money, just print some more, ya know?

DInt. Ian’s Car.
By now they should be in the car – they carry on arguing as Ian stares straight ahead silently fuming with anger. Emory needs to be in the back seat (trust me).

EMORY
Nice connection. Haha. Oh man, that’s good – and who’s a cheater? You said you were a camouflaged lizard.

WALDO
I said I was a chameleon.

EMORY
No, you said you…

IAN
SHUT UP, WILL YOU SHUT UP…SHUT UP! (then quietly and without pauses) Look, I’ve had my heart broken today by a back-stabbing witch and some city-slicker, I don’t need to have my eardrums broken as well. I don’t care nearly as much as you two do about this game and would rather call it off. In fact, I’m calling Doug.

Ian takes his cell phone from his pocket.

IAN
Who has a cell phone? Does Simon have his?

Ian pushes a few buttons on his cell phone.

IAN
It doesn’t matter anyway, my cell phones dead – great! Can I use one of your phones?

EMORY
We only brought these walkie talkies.

IAN
Perfect, just perfect. (pause) You guys hungry?

WALDO
Starving! All I’ve eaten today is an apple, a huge sandwich and a few bowls of cereal.

EMORY
You ate the last of the sugar-coated cookie treasures.

WALDO
I didn’t know they were yours.

EMORY
You didn’t know they were mine! Well, that being said, I guess you wouldn’t mind if I, O I don’t know…

IAN
Awesome! (Sarcastically)

DExt. Ian’s Car
They continue bickering as Ian drives off.

CExt. Downtown Irwin.
Cut to shot of Simon and Abby sitting on a curb eating slices of pizza, half eaten.

ABBY
How could they even make that claim? How could anyone make that claim?

SIMON
Maybe it is, in fact, the world’s largest slice of pizza. You don’t know.

ABBY
I guess I’ll ask Mr. Guiness.

Should be done with slices of pizza by now, they get up to throw away the napkins, or something (crust?). The following are walking lines, moving shot.

ABBY
So what do you think we should do?

SIMON
Geez, I don’t know, I guess college. I mean I think I’d like business. But I just don’t know.

ABBY
I was talking about now, like right now, where do you think we should hide?

SIMON
I know, I was kidding. Hmm, how about blah, blah, blah?

ABBY
Cool, Simon. Hey, I was thinking about a meeting place, in case we get separated.

SIMON
I was too actually. I was thinking covert would be good, what do you think?

ABBY
Yeah, start a fire and make s’mores. It’ll be our own little fortress.

SIMON
Yeah, it’ll be sweet as.

ABBY
And we could stop at my house to get Philip for company.

SIMON
He’ll bark.

ABBY
He’s not as chatty since he got hit by that car. Anyway, he’s nice, and you love him.

SIMON
He’s probably my favorite dog.

ABBY
Oh, and I could grab a pillow.

SIMON
Get that book you were reading too.

ABBY
Ok. Which one? The one about the Octpous or the Biography on Harper Lee?

SIMON
Where the kid dies in Alaska.

ABBY
Yeah on a bus. My dad’s reading that. But it’s really sad. I don’t know if you’d like it.

SIMON
I happen to love sad. But whatever. I liked the last one you had me read.

ABBY
Dandelion Wine?

SIMON
Yeah! Good stuff.

ABBY
They’re really different.

SIMON
Fine, just get some comics off of…Larry.

ABBY
You are not calling my brother Larry.

SIMON
(Laughing) It’s a good name. It’s fine.

CInt. Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot of Ian, Emory, and Waldo driving. Waldo and Emory still bickering

IAN
I was beginning to despise Waldo and Emory, they never stopped, they just never shut up. But it was nice to have my mind off Julie. Let’s stop here.

Cut to shot of Abby and Simon walking down sidewalk, this is a moving shot from the car. Camera then pans back into car interior as Ian pulls into a spot.

WALDO
FOODS!

Waldo smacks Ian on the back of the head as he gets out of the car.

DExt. Cemetery.
Cut to shot of Doug sitting atop a tombstone. Drinking a juice box and eating pbj sandwich. Quintino jumps from behind him. Doug squeezes juice box. Cut to head shot of Doug.

DOUG
How do you do that?

Cut to wide shot without Quintino.

QUINTINO (off camera)
MAGIC!

Doug stands up quickly. Looks around for a bit. Then sits back down and laughs to himself.

DOUG
Fantastic!

CInt. Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot of Ian, Emory, and Waldo sitting in car letting the food digest. Georgie peers in at Emory (through the back window). He is still wearing the scarf. He motions ‘shhh’ with his mouth and finger. Georgie is carrying Kaboom’s flowers.

EMORY
Is Georgie not caught?

WALDO
Man, this sucks!

IAN
No, he’s caught (looking straight ahead, not paying attention)

EMORY
Pffft

Waldo and Emory laugh about it, maybe say some biting remarks, as long as they are biting.

IAN
Ok, listen up: I don’t really feel like playing this game anymore. What I want to do is find Julie and talk to her. I’m thinking I can find her number and straighten things out over the phone a bit. I’ll drop you guys off on my way home.

WALDO
Hold on, I’m not about to let…

IAN
No, you hold on. I’m driving and I say this game is over. This game was an impossibility to begin with, and so is my happiness, I guess. But I’m trying to change that.

Ian drives off. Waldo sits back in his seat forcefully (like a brat).

EExt. Wooded Area 2 (Park by Chiarizio’s)
Cut to shot of Simon and Abby walking in woods.

ABBY
Maybe it’s not such a good idea to bring Philip along. What about Boutros-Boutros?

Simon stops and looks at Abby

ABBY
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry – I just remembered right after I said it. (pause) He was such a cute bunny.

SIMON
I know. He was getting old though.

ABBY
Here’s the spot I had in mind.

SIMON
Yep, that’s the one I was thinking of.

BExt “Meeting Place”.
They enter the thicket. Cut to shot of Simon entering their meeting spot, with Abby trailing.

ABBY
How did you know about this spot?

SIMON
I hid here one time. I think you were the seeker.

ABBY
I was* – I hate being the seeker.

Abby pulls out a hat and puts it on (the same color hat as Julie’s)

SIMON
Off to your house now?

ABBY
Yeah-Yeah, let’s do that.

EExt. Path Next to “Meeting Place”
They exit bush. Simon is not carrying his bag.

SIMON
Do you think it would be safe to light a fire in there?

Abby shrugs her shoulders.

ABBY
(snapping her finger) Baby light my fire.

SIMON
(Laughing) That’s not how that song goes.

ABBY
Desire...

Abby shrugs her shoulders and keeps singing.

SIMON
Not even close.

EInt. Ian’s Car.
Cut to shot of Ian, Waldo, and Emory driving.

EMORY
This is so lame. I don’t think it should count if you were driving.

WALDO
Yeah, it shouldn’t even count.

EMORY
Well in your case, you were camouflaged in an open field, so it sort-of does count…

Cut to shot of Ian driving, looking right.

EExt. Path by ‘Meeting Place’.
Cut to shot of Abby and Simon.

SIMON
Ah, I forgot my bag. Hold on a sec.

EInt. Ian’s Car
Simon runs off. Camera shot is from car as he runs off, staying on Abby – her back is turned.
Cut to Ian, Waldo, Emory.

IAN
It can’t be this easy. Guys shut up, be quiet.

EExt. Ian’s Car/Park
Ian pulls his car off and gets out of his car looking towards Abby’s direction.

Cut to shot of Abby singing her version of The Doors “Light my fire”.
Cut to shot of Ian walking towards her.

IAN
Julie (at a normal volume)
Cut to shot of Abby

IAN (off camera)
Hey you girl!

Abby looks up and to her back-left, her eyes get big and she starts to run.
Cut to shot of Ian as he begins to pick up pace.

IAN
Why was she running? Nothing made sense anymore. Seems like you have a gift for running away from those you are supposed to love – get back here!

Cut to shot of Abby running with Ian seen behind.

IAN
Who’s that slimy you’re with? Where’s he at, huh? Where is he?

ABBY
Simon, run!

Cut to shot of Simon just coming out of the bush with his bag in hand and then stopping

ABBY (off camera)
Simon, run! It’s happening!

SIMON
Abby?

Simon runs towards her direction.

EExt. Trees.
Cut to shot of Abby with Ian close behind

IAN
What’s with the hat, huh? Why’d you do this to me?

Ian grabs her by the shoulder.

IAN
Look , all I want to do is iron things out.

Ian spins Abby around.

IAN
Abby?

ABBY
(panting with her hand to her chestbone) Yeah, who’d you think I was - Simon?

IAN
No, Julie.

Abby looks confused as she tries to catch her breath.

EExt. Tree.
Cut to shot of Simon running to side of tree. Cut to wide-far-away shot of Ian and Abby.

EExt. Trees.
Cut to shot of Ian and Abby

ABBY
Who is Julie?

IAN
I don’t know. I really don’t know.

EExt. Ian’s Car.
Ian walks towards car. Cut to Simon’s view of him walking towards car as Abby walks towards car.

SIMON
(to himself) Abby. (outloud) Abby!

Cut to shot of top-back half of Simon as he waves at Ian’s car pulling off – Waldo and Emory are in the front seat, with Emory Driving. Ian will bang on the passenger window twice before getting in back seat with Abby.

SIMON
What am I going to do?

FExt. Side of Road.
Cut to shot of Doug walking on side of road. He still has the rake.

DOUG
I’m in the clear. All I have to do is wear this mustache and keep moving.

BExt. Suburb Sidewalk.
Cut to shot of Geoffrey and Julie at the car, just as they had been when Ian first saw them. It zooms in on them. Then on Geoffrey.

GEOFFREY
Let’s get married.

Julie is wearing a wedding veil.

JULIE
I DO.

FExt. Ian’s Car/Garage.
Cut to shot of Ian leaning against his car coming out of a day-dream. He shakes his head, turns around and kicks his foot on the tire, which is flat. The hood is up. Lackey is underneath it with The Grease. Abby is in the front seat reading.

LACKEY (to The Grease)
Now, is this all the engine? (Makes a sweeping motion with his hand over the parts under the hood)

The Grease ignores Lackey and closes the hood.

The GREASE
Did you know these injectors were leaking? (spits)

Emory walks over to join them.

FInt. Ian’s Car

IAN
Letting Emory drive turned out to be worse an idea than I thought. After turning the radio to full blast, he decided to take my car over three speed bumps that were clearly marked, at the alarming speed of 92 miles per hour. He managed to blow out both front tires, scrape the fender something awful, and on top of that, the car reeked of gasoline. Luckily, my cousin The Grease was a mechanic.

During the narration: shot of Emory, Waldo, and Ian driving, separate shots of Abby, or Abby, Waldo and Emory. They will be holding their ears, and jumping from their seats at the same time.

FExt. Garage
Emory walks over to join them. He is chewing a mouthful of gum.

The GREASE
(Wipes his hands off with a rag) What’d you do, drive over the Grand Canyon? (he laughs)

IAN
I let him drive is what happened.

EMORY
Those speed bumps came out of nowhere.

The GREASE
You don’t drive good. (Spits)

WALDO
The Grease is cool.

IAN
I’ll be back for it later.

Ian hands the mechanic the keys and walks over to the side of the road. Abby joins him and then Waldo and Emory do as well. Ian starts walking and they all follow.

FExt. Side of Road.

IAN
I figured it was probably best to keep moving. I felt that if I kept moving I’d eventually find Julie, even though it wasn’t realistic. Everyone be on the lookout for a girl wearing a hat and the skull-face she’s with.

EMORY
I saw a girl wearing a hat.

IAN
Where?

EMORY
Back at Wanderson’s Drugs (nods his head back, chewing gum)

WALDO
Lot’s of girls wear hats.

ABBY
I wear hats sometimes.

IAN
But this is a girl in our grade. She was at the party too.

EMORY
Yeah, that’s her.

Ian stops.

IAN
What are you saying?

EMORY
I talked to a girl wearing a hat at the drug store.

WALDO
Yeah right.

ABBY
What girl are we talking about?

IAN
Julie (to Abby) – wait a second, you’re trying to tell me that you talked to Julie, the girl I have been trying to find for the last two hours, just now at Wandersons?

Shot of Emory nodding, chewing gum.

IAN
What did she say?

EMORY
Ok, I didn’t talk to her so much as listen. I mean, I heard her asking for directions.

WALDO
HA!

Ian goes to run back.

EMORY
Well she’s gone now.

Cut to entire group minus Ian. Car drives by with Geoffrey and Julie in it

WALDO
There they go there.

The car and Waldo’s observation go by unnoticed.

IAN
Where were they headed? Where are they going?

EMORY
It’s about 3 miles up and then a left. I don’t know.

Ian starts walking briskly, they all follow. Abby stops and turns back. She’s pulls a book out of her bag and opens it up. She pulls out a picture of Simon with an ex-girlfriend. The picture has been defaced.

EInt. Abby’s Room
Cut to shot of Abby and Simon sitting on the floor of Abby’s room. Abby has a picture in her hand.

ABBY
I never really liked you two as a couple, to be honest.

SIMON
We should have just stayed friends. (pause)

Simon looks up at Abby. He looks sad.
Cut to shot of Abby.
Abby picks up a pen and starts drawing on the picture.

ABBY
Hey, check this out.

SIMON
Ah! (laughs) Let me do some.

Simon takes the picture and draws on it. He hands it to Abby, she laughs, they laugh.

FExt Side of Road
Abby grabs a rock and places it atop the picture on the side of the road. Abby runs to catch up. Cue Music: The You, “Make His Way”

FExt. Garage.
Cut to shot of Simon running up to car and looking inside. He talks to Grease, Grease points out towards where they all went. Simon starts to run off.

FExt. Side of Road
Cut to shot of group (w/ Quintino)

FExt. Other Side of Road
Cut to shot of Doug.

FExt. Side of Road.
Cut to shot of group (w/o Quintino).

FExt. Other Side of Road.
Cut to shot of Doug.

FExt. The Road (preferably aerial shot via bucket truck)
Then show both Doug and group walking in opposite directions and opposite sides. Waldo circles back grabs Doug and pulls him over to Ian. Shot of entire group running

FExt. Side of Road
Cut to shot of Simon spotting Abby’s clue (the picture). He smiles at the picture, blows on it to get the dust off and tucks the picture in his breast pocket and starts running.

BExt. Railroad Crossing.
Cut to group walking slowly and coming to a standstill at a rail road crossing. Music fades.*

ABBY
I’m tired, can we stop for a bit?

WALDO
Nice outfit Jerk.

DOUG
Shut your mouth. Who’s left? Is Georgie caught?

EMORY
Yeah, but he doesn’t understand.

WALDO
It’s just Simon and Quintino.

EMORY
It’s weird I thought I just saw him.

ABBY
Simon?

EMORY
No, Quintino. Geez, what are you guys in love or something? You two are always together.

ABBY
We’re friends.

EMORY
Aw, Abby-Dooby.

DOUG
Why don’t you two shut up – I’m getting sick of this.

WALDO (looks shocked)
DOUGGIE DOG-DOG!

EMORY
DOGGIE-DOUG!

(bickering)

IAN
Can everyone shut up? Is that possible? (pause) Who knows where we’re at?

EMORY
I know we can get to the same place by taking these tracks. Almost cut the time in half.

DOUG
How do you know that?

EMORY
I’ve been here before, that’s how – I do live around here Doggie-Doug.

DOUG
That’s it.

Doug throws down rake and advances. Ian holds Doug back.

IAN
OK – OK! We’ll take the train tracks. But I don’t like it. Not with him leading.

Emory goes to the front to lead. Abby pulls a armless/legless, small ceramic doll out of her bag, camera focuses on it, she sets it down and joins others. Music will play as they walk the tracks. A few shots of this.

FExt. Train Tracks
Cut to shot of Doug and Abby
ABBY
Don’t let them get to you. They’re both just idiots.

DOUG
But don’t they get to you? Always on your case about Simon.

ABBY
A little. But I know Simon and I are friends, so it doesn’t really bother me.

DOUG
You two are inseparable.

ABBY
I know.
BExt. Railroad Crossing
Cut to shot of Simon walking to train tracks and pausing. He puts his hand up above his eyes to shield them from the sun and looks down the tracks. Then he spots the tiny ceramic doll.

EExt. Garden
Cut to shot of Simon and Abby gardening.

SIMON
Wow, check this out. Weird.

Shot of a hole filled with legless/armless tiny ceramic dolls.

ABBY
Who would bury this?

SIMON
I can see your Grandma doing it.

ABBY
Or your mom.

SIMON
You’re so dumb. I’m keeping this one. And you keep this one. And Boutros-Boutros… (Abby laughs)

Fade out at ellipses.

BExt. Rail Road Crossing
Cut to shot of Simon walking on the tracks in the group’s wake.

FExt. Garage
Cut to day-dream sequence. Camera focuses on the Grease’s face and zooms out. He has a tub of chicken and he is eating a fried breast quite grossly. Camera moves off him and left to reveal Julie and Geoffrey walking hand-in-hand. They are walking towards the mechanic to ask for directions.

JULIE
We’re a little lost and madly in love…

Julie looks up at Geoffrey. Geoffrey eats a pretzel.

JULIE
Could you maybe point us in the right direction?

Enter Ian.

IAN
Julie, you’ve been duped. There’s something in those pretzels.

Geoffrey goes to run off. But Ian is right in front of him.

IAN
Not so easy, punk. Not so easy.

Ian pokes Geoffrey in the chest and advances. Geoffrey keeps backing up, pleading.

GEOFFREY
It was just a love serum, that’s all. I’ve only used it once before, please! Please big sir.

Ian now has Geoffrey pinned against his car.

IAN
I want you to get into my car and drive. Take your pretzel-eating, love stealing…

Ian is distracting as he says the last few words, and is looking off left behind him.
Cut to the Grease and Julie.

The GREASE
Do you, (eats some chicken) take this Julie (hands her his chicken) to be your wedding-life?

Cut to Ian.

IAN
NO!!! Julie, wait.

Cut to Julie, eating chicken.

JULIE
Ian. Ian we’re here. (Emory’s voice)

FExt. Train Tracks (B-Y Park)
EMORY
We’re here. We’re going to turn off here, this will lead to the cabins. Are you all right? (Slowly)

IAN
Chicken.

DOUG
Yeah, I know what you mean.

Ian looks at Doug and shakes his head. They all walk off the tracks and into the woods, towards the cabin. Abby checks her bag, looks around, spots something on the ground, picks it up, grabs a pen from her bag and rights “Cabin this way” on it (something that can point).

DExt. Wooded Area 3 next to Cabin.
Cut to shot of Geoffrey gathering twigs. Cut to shot of Ian crouched down with Abby, Emory, Waldo, and Doug behind him.

IAN
I had found him. That Skull. And he was gathering a bundle of sticks of all things. There he is. That’s him.

DOUG
I’ve seen him at school – I think he’s a year behind us.

IAN
I’ll bet he is.

Ian walks towards Geoffrey.

IAN
Hey skull-face!

Geoffrey turns around.

GEOFFREY
Do I know you?

Now they are face-to-face.

IAN
What are you doing with my girl?

GEOFFREY
Who’s your girl?

IAN
Well you can keep her anyway*. (pause) JULIE! ‘Who’s your girl?’ You know who I’m talking about.

Needs to be said on top of ‘Who’s your girl?’; ‘girl’ and ‘well’ will clash, almost in the same breath.

GEOFFREY
Julie Silverstein?

IAN
That’s the one, man – that’s the one.

Quick cut-to of Ian pinning Geoffrey to car, the day-dream scene.

IAN
All right let’s fight. I’m gonna see what you’re made of.

GEOFFREY
Ok?

IAN
I don’t want to fight you. It’s just that, she and I hit it off.

GEOFFREY
Look man, she’s my sister. I don’t know what your deal is, but…

IAN
Sister? I was about ready to vomit.

Enter Julie from woods.

JULIE
Hey what’s going on, Geoffrey?

Julie looks at Geoffrey and then at Ian

IAN
Hey how’s it going? ‘Weird seeing you here.

JULIE
Oh hey, I thought you looked familiar – Ewan right?

IAN
Yeah (laughingly), how’ve you been?

JULIE
Ok I guess. Does your family have a cabin up here?

IAN
Cabin (laughingly) No, I was just in the area, looking at trees with my friends, and… look I just want to know…Are we more than…uh…Do you remember our conversation?

JULIE
Hmm, I don’t know. You mean at the party?*

Flashback scene as she narrates in italics.

JULIE
I remember I asked you what you were drinking (because it looked sort of strange, you know not your normal party drink. It was apple I think. And I said that I loved juice. You asked me what my shirt was made of, which was a little odd. That’s about it. Jack and I left shortly after that.)*

*Person in foreground walks away and reveals Jack and Julie holding hands.
Refer back to this scene as it appears earlier in the script (p. 5). This shot here is going to be difficult because we both need to have Julie narrate and show the scene with dialogue. I’m up for suggestions.

Cut to shot of Julie.

JULIE
Jack, are you in there? I want you to meet someone from school.

IAN
Jack? Who the crap was Jack?

JULIE
There you are.

Enter Jack

JULIE
Jack this is Ewan. Ewan this is my wonderful boyfriend, Jack. He’s from England (said with her hand to her mouth and to the side, like she telling a secret, but not whispered).

Jack shakes Ian’s hand.

JACK
My darling (to Julie). And how do we know Julie?

IAN
Well…

JULIE
We graduated together. Yeah I guess they just happened to be in the area.

JACK
Brilliant. Are these your mates?

Enter Simon.

ABBY
Simon!

Simon and Abby hug. Ian’s hand comes from over his shoulder and tags him with his pointer finger.

SIMON
Hey I found all your clues. They were good ones. How’d you know I was trailing you?

Abby shrugs her shoulders.

SIMON
Well, I missed you.

ABBY
I missed you. It’s boring without you.

Simon and Abby will say their “I miss you’s” very friendlike, not as if its hard for them to say it.

EMORY
Awww, that’s so cute. Isn’t it Waldo?

WALDO
Why don’t you two just kiss.

DOUG
Why don’t you two go home? Seriously, just leave.

Waldo and Emory start to talk/fight.

DOUG
News flash: you’re annoying beyond belief. You’re only here because we feel sorry for you. I hate to say it, but it’s true. If we’re the only friends you two have, and we are, then you should act as if it means something.

Emory slaps Doug in the face and runs. Doug runs off after him.

WALDO
(looking shocked and amused) Douggie-dog.

Waldo runs after them.

Cut to shot of Julie and Jack at the door of the cabin. Jacks arm around Julie’s shoulder.

JACK
It was nice meeting all of you.

JULIE
Bye Ewan!

JACK
Cheers!

Cut to group, Ian waves. Doug, Emory and Waldo all look haggard.

JACK (off camera)
Good luck with the sport.

They sit down around a tree. Zoom in on Ian. He is sad, down in the dumps.

IAN
What had happened? That pretzel-eater, Geoffrey, was Julie’s brother? I was completely wrong. Jack actually seemed all right, maybe a little weak. I really thought this summer was going to be good – I thought I finally reeled one in. We could have gone to restaurants and seen movies. The wave pool. I would have had to call it off before I went away to college, but we had at least two solid months to make-out. Well, maybe a month and a half before I had to get weird and distant. And then I would have sent her an instant message or whatever, but…what went wrong? In my head, everything seemed so perfect. Just completely perfect.

During the narraton: Shots of Geoffrey, Jack, Jule and Ian talking at the party, shots of Julie, etc. It might be funny to have a picture of a computer screen when he says the line about Instant Messaging. Maybe.

Shot of group.

ABBY
So now what?

DOUG
Yeah, do we just end it, give up hope?

IAN
No. We don’t. Let’s keep playing, you guys go hide.

ABBY
But its over, Quintino is impossible to find – remember last year at your house?

EInt. Ian’s room
Cut to Ian waking up out of bed. He exits his room and closes the door to reveal Quintino behind the door. Quintino takes off his glasses to rub his eyes.

IAN
I guess we can walk back at least, see if my car is done.

They start walking back.

FExt. Train Tracks

IAN
